Bartending 101

There are only a couple things you really need to know to be an effective bartender in your own home. Speaking as someone who has graduated bartending school you need to know the following.

Liquor: Like peach snaps, Chambord etc.  This is your spice cabinet, the goal is to use these to flavor all sorts of things.

Vodka: Consider this your tofu of alcohol. Its not really terribly worth drinking on your own without any mixer. But it will take on the flavor of anything you give it. In general, just buy the cheapest stuff you can buy because you really want the mixers to come out.

Tequila: A little more worth drinking on your own. The agave sugar in the alcohol gives the liquor a nice sweetness that can legitimately vary between really good Tequila and not so good Tequila. Worth it to buy Patron here just for sipping but the cheap stuff should be used for margaritas and the most expensive stuff used for sipping.

Rum: Probably the sweetest out of the three. Good for shots. Furthermore, this should be considered your tropical liquor. Daiquiri's abound!

Gin: Known for the tremendous smell of the juniper berries used in making it. Not a great mixing alcohol because of the smell. Good for drinking solo.

Whiskey: Depending on the type of Whiskey, there a huge variety of things you can do with this. From the sweeter Bourbon's that can be used as a steak sauce to Scotch which should only ever, ever, be drunk by itself as a sipping liquor.
